Three years ago, my husband retired after serving 27 years in the U.S. Air Force. While preparing for retirement, my husband made sure to take advantage of all the classes the Air Force offered/required for soon-to-be retirees through the Transition Assistance Program (TAP). One of the requirements that was so helpful for us was meeting together with an adviser from Family Support to talk about the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP). He was a retiree himself and explained details regarding member retirement benefits and pay, dependent benefits, and how benefits can change in the event of the retiree’s death. While some of these topics can be hard to think through, it is so important to know your options. Learning about and being aware of all these details, through TAP and other resources, helped us to know what we might want to look for in a new job, regarding benefits or even how much we might need in income additional to retirement pay.

Mission Response:

Congratulations to your husband and entire family Janelle! Retirement from the military is a big transition and there are so many decisions to make. Great job working through the administrative process and taking advantage of the resources offered! Know that spouses are welcome and encouraged to attend retirement and transition seminars with their Service member, capacity permitting. This is your transition too!
