My husband and I are both active duty, so we have TRICARE Prime automatically. Talking with friends outside the military, I feel lucky to have my health care covered since I don’t have co-pays and out-of-pocket costs!

As our family has grown, I’ve been able to use the dental benefits for our kids at a very reasonable price! In situations when we needed specialty care, we’ve been referred to civilian specialty care that has been covered by TRICARE.

Not every system is perfect, but it has worked so far for our family and my pocketbook is happy!

Mission Response:

Thank you for this great tip, Kristin! Health care is a necessity, and it is important to know your options and coverage to make the best decisions for your family’s medical needs and financial readiness. TRICARE is the military’s health insurance program. As Kristin mentions, active-duty Service members are automatically covered by TRICARE Prime. Family members may be covered under TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select, which allows more provider flexibility but also includes deductibles and co-payments. Check out our TRICARE Overview and Health Insurance resources for more in-depth information. Information on coverage for members of the Guard/Reserve is available here, and transitioning Service members can continue coverage under the Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP) for 180 days. Remember, every family’s situation is unique. Make sure to consider location, health care needs, and financial resources as you choose what type of coverage is the best fit. Your needs may change as your family moves, grows, or your spouse leaves military service. Visit tricare.mil to learn more about eligibility, compare plans, and find providers. Don’t forget to consider dental and vision care, as coverage is separate for family members.
