Affordable Family Fun During Deployment
Affordable Family Fun During Deployment
As is the case with most military families, my husband was recently deployed for six months. I was really impressed by the programs the Air Force provided for families of deployed military members. The Outdoor Rec R4R Deployed Affected offered various discounted events each month such as movie nights, horseback riding and indoor rock climbing just to name a few. The base also did a fantastic job communicating special promotions offered to military families such as discounted tickets to local baseball games. They also provided a free night of child care each month to give the non-deployed parent a break which can be a godsend financially if you have multiple children.

Mission Response:
What a great picture of you and your little one enjoying some fun outdoors, Beth! We love to hear about all the great programs on your installation that helped your family while your spouse was deployed. Milspouses know that deployments are challenging for the deployed Service member AND the family back home. Know that you are not alone and there are fun and affordable activities available for your family during this time.
Seek out programs and resources on your installation to learn more. Like Beth mentions, these programs often include special discounts and promotions that can offset the impact on your wallet. The military and family support center on your installation is a good place to get connected with local programs and activities. Make sure to factor in the fun by tapping into Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) offerings and inquire what is available specifically for deployment-affected families. It is important to know that your income and expenses may change during deployment.
