Budgeting – Get Started!
Budgeting – Get Started!
Creating a budget started as an overwhelming task because I had no idea where to begin. My tip is to search online for “example budget spreadsheets,” open an Excel document, and just get it done!!
You’ll be glad you did, because even going through the motions of looking up exact monthly costs of everything (internet, phone, dining out) on your bank account will help you realize what you’re overspending and underspending. For us, it was overspending on restaurants and not spending enough on family outings like the photo here of us at the pumpkin patch.

Thank you for sharing this important tip Patty! Sometimes the hardest part of budgeting is getting started. There are many ways to track your money but the most important thing is that you do it. Find the system that works best for you and stick with it. Options may include a spreadsheet, mobile app, or pen and paper. You can also use our sample worksheet to get started. Visit Money Ready 101: Create a Budget for detailed information on four steps to create a budget that works best for you.
The purpose of a spending plan is not restriction. Instead, it can help you assess your current situation and align your spending with your short and long-term goals. And, don’t forget the fun! Like Patty and her family, make sure to include entertainment and fun activities, like a family trip to the pumpkin patch! Include activities and events your family enjoys to make it easier to stick to your spending plan over time.
