Healthcare Coverage

Healthcare Coverage

We have health care through the military, and I helped my husband apply through them. We had to drive to our nearest DEERS office and bring numerous documents with us. Our health insurance is called TRICARE Reserve Select, and we have great coverage! This is through the KS ARNG, and he will be eligible as long as he is in the National Guard.

This excellent coverage and low premiums are the reason that my husband has stayed in the National Guard. If he continues serving for 20 years or more, he will also be eligible to keep his coverage after retirement. This is a blessing to our family that even if something catastrophic happens, we will be covered!

: Thank you for your great tip and photo of your beautiful family, Amber! Health care coverage through TRICARE is one of the great benefits of military service. Our TRICARE Overview handout is a great place to start to learn about eligibility and enrollment procedures. As Amber says in her tip, coverage options are available for Reserve and National Guard members and their families, depending on status. Visit this TRICARE page for more on Reserve and National Guard member eligibility.

It is important to remember that every family’s situation is unique. Evaluate your options through TRICARE and civilian coverage to determine the best fit for your needs. Some of the coverage features to compare include premiums, copays, deductible, health care needs of family members, access to providers in terms of location and network status, and prescription needs. Make sure to review your options in light of your family spending plan too. There are many factors to weigh, but with some research and planning, you can find the right fit.
