Make Budgeting Fun with Your Spouse

It is so important for you and your spouse to be on the same page when it comes to spending. To achieve this, we decided to set a “date night” to go over our finances and create a budget. This helps us be aware of what we’re spending so we know where our money is going, but also make the budgeting process more fun!

While having a budget is important, we also don’t want it to be so strict that we don’t have any spending money! We include an allowance in the budget to spend on anything we want, guilt free. In the past, I’ve spent my allowance to watch Air Force compete for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy!

That’s such an important note to foot stomp – you can’t cut out ALL the fun or it’s unlikely you’ll stick to your plan.  PLUS, watching those football games is certainly fun! We also love the idea of a financial “date night.” It is critical for you and your spouse to be on the same page when it comes to finances. By making the process fun, it makes it easier to stick with your plan. Communication is key, so consider using these handouts — Personal Financial Values and My Rating as a Money Manager — to get the discussion going.

Whether you have a budget in place or you are just getting started, this worksheet is a great resource. Even more information is available in our Money Ready 101 Budget section.
